PFAS are among the most persistent contaminants found in water. Together with Service in Separation (Servis) and STI, Ferr-Tech is working on an innovative technology that is not only designed to remove PFAS from water, but to actually break down these highly persistent compounds.
The development and scale-up of this technology is supported through OPZuid, and the project has been designated as a strategic project within the programme.
From promising laboratory results to real-world application
Over the past few years, Ferr-Tech, Servis and STI have combined their respective areas of expertise into a single technology. Ferr-Tech contributes its powerful oxidation technology, FerSol®, while Servis brings expertise in water treatment and practical implementation. STI focuses on process engineering and the modular design of the installation.
Laboratory research has shown promising results in the treatment of PFAS, PFOS and GenX. A patent has also been granted for the technology developed.
The next step is equally important: demonstrating that the technology can also be deployed effectively at a larger scale and under real-world operating conditions.
OPZuid enables further validation and scale-up
With support from OPZuid, the three partners are now working on this next stage of development. A large-scale, modular installation is being developed to validate the technology under real-world conditions and enable further scale-up.
The modular design makes it possible to test the technology with different water streams and in a variety of practical applications, representing an important step towards future industrial deployment.
“The results we have seen in the laboratory so far are promising. This project allows us to take the step that is essential for any new water treatment technology: demonstrating that it also works effectively at a larger scale and under real-world conditions,” says Richard Bruins, CEO of Ferr-Tech.
Collaboration as the foundation for innovation
The strength of the project lies in the combination of different areas of expertise. Ferr-Tech contributes its knowledge of oxidation chemistry and FerSol®, STI focuses on process engineering, integration and scale-up, while Servis contributes expertise in the realisation, system integration and practical implementation of the installation.
By bringing this knowledge together, the partners are developing a scalable technology that could in the future contribute to reducing PFAS in industrial wastewater streams and other contaminated water streams.
Co-funded by OPZuid
The development of the PFAS oxidation technology is supported by an OPZuid grant, and the project has been designated as a strategic project within OPZuid.
